| Comment | A close-up portrait of Brown Falcon encountered along a track beside Lake Borrie, Werribee. The photo shows an adult’s characteristic fine black-brown streaks on its forehead, extending beyond the eye; dark vertical stripes around its ear coverts; and dark “mustachial” stripe extending from under the eye to past the side of the throat. After looking at me somewhat quizzically, it eventually took off and landed further off. Perhaps a long telephoto lens looks uncomfortably like a rifle to a Brown Falcon. According to HANSAB, despite their invaluable role in keeping rabbits and rats under control, they are “occasionally shot by farmers or pigeon-fanciers because supposed to threaten lambs or pigeons”( https://hanzab.birdlife.org.au/species/brown-falcon/). | ||||||||||||||||||
