CommentBirds of the Southern Ocean spend months on the wing in remote regions many kilometers from land. This Southern Fulmar was some 500km from South Georgia, half way to Elephant Island on the Antarctic Peninsula. Here it had encountered A23a, the world's largest iceberg. When it calved off the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea in 1986, it was around 4,000 square kilometers in area (over 20km across). It was stuck on the bottom of the Weddell Sea for over 36 years, but finally started moving in Jan 2023 and then entered the circumpolar current heading for South Georgia where this petrel met it in Jan 2024. I like this shot because it captures a real sense of the solitary life of the bird, the scale of the iceberg and the power of the Southern Ocean.
