CommentHello, I would like feedback on cropping of images. How much is allowed? This image has been cropped by around 20%.
Many thanks,
Jenny

Glenn Pure2026-06-18 08:54:57First, sorry for the delay in providing critque Jenny. This one seems to have been missed.

In terms of cropping, there are two main issues to consider. The first is composition and placement of visual elements. This is somewhat subjective but there are quite a few sites and 'rules' if you do a search on composing bird photos. Some are better than others. It would be worth reading a few of these and making up your own mind.

The second aspect is image quality. Cropping up to a point will not affect quality for photos of the size BLP accepts (1800 pixels on the longest side). As a good starting point, it's best to keep your crop large enough so that you have around twice that number of pixels (ie, a minimum of 3600 pixels on the longest side) when editing, before downsizing. However, if the starting shot is good and sharp and doesn't have too much digital noise, you can usually get away with a smaller size. When I refer to digital noise, I mean before denoising software is applied. The higher the noise, the harder the software has to work and the more likely detail will be damaged or smoothed over - this will become much more obvious the more you 'zoom in' by cropping. Definitely don't go below the minimum size or your image processing software will have to upscale the photo to get to 1800 pixels on the longest side and this will almost certainly damage the image quality. I prepared an article which you can find in the resources section on how much you can crop for different camera types. You may want to look at that.

I hope that helps
Glenn
Simon Pelling2026-06-18 16:27:09You didn't specifically seek comments on image quality, but I would just note that I think this image is too 'cool' in terms of white balance. There seems to be a bluish cast on the ground. I would add a bit more warmth (and make it slightly brighter to bring out the colours more).

Thanks
Simon
