| Comment | About a dozen Silver Gulls were present, frequently interacting in pairs. The more dominant bird would vocalise loudly, prompting the other to adopt a submissive or compliant posture. The birds would then move on, pair with others, and repeat the process. A submissive bird in one interaction could become the dominant bird in the next. This behaviour may be an example of a dominance cascade, in which hierarchy remains fluid depending on access to food, mates, or preferred space. | ||||||||||||||||||
| Equipment | Equipment: Nikon Z8, Nikkor Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S, Nikkor Z TC-1.4x Settings: 840mm, f/9, 1/3200s, ISO-250 Workflow: Processed in Lightroom and sent to Photoshop for downsize, sharpen and export. Field notes: During this sequence, a break in heavy cloud to the west on an otherwise dull day illuminated the plumage nicely. An out-of-focus bird in the background can often be a distraction, but on this occasion it plays a key role. Without this bird, the bills of both subjects, crucial in conveying the behaviour, would be barely visible. Processing notes: A wide crop enabled more comfortable placement of all birds in the image. | ||||||||||||||||||
