CommentA Common Greenshank noticed on its own at T-Section Lagoon, Werribee. As the ABG notes, they do tend to be solitary when feeding. Its characteristic long green legs are very visible in the photo. A migrant from the Siberian Arctic, it is probably beginning to think of heading back there for the Greenshank breeding season. Just a mere 13,000km to our north. With all the threats to their coastal stopovers and wetland habitats along the way, they have recently been listed in the 2020 Australian Action Plan for Australian Birds as “vulnerable”, due to “steep declines” in their numbers in recent years (p.306). There are now only some 23,700 reaching Australia, 34% decline in fifteen years. Perhaps they warrant being renamed “Uncommon Greenshanks”. The Australian Action Plan notes they are “vulnerable to habitat loss through climate change or water extraction for irrigation, and are notoriously wary, so may be more sensitive to disturbance than most other shorebird species” (p.307). Wary indeed, and understandably so given all the threats it is encountering.
