CommentPink-eared Ducks seemed to be everywhere at Lake Borrie on this particular morning. Perhaps the word had got around on duck social media that the annual Victorian duck-hunting massacre had just begun the day before, and many had sought sanctuary at the Werribee Treatment Plant where all birds are protected. Certainly, the Pink-ears we met were especially jittery. The moment we would step out the car, they would immediately scatter. Could it be that a long telephoto lens bears all too much resemblance to a rifle barrel? Despite a joint Victorian parliamentary enquiry, commissioned by the Victorian Government itself, recommending that duck-hunting be banned, as it is in NSW and Queensland, the new State Government chose to ignore their own enquiry’s recommendations, and authorize yet another duck massacre, with these beautiful Pink-ears once again in the cross-hairs of gung-ho duck shooters, along with many other duck species, including endangered ones shot or wounded accidentally. If past experience is anything to go by, many will be injured and suffer excruciatingly drawn out deaths. The great majority of Victorians want to see an end to this atavistic “sport” but once again our state political leaders on both sides have chosen political expediency over averting bird extinctions, cruelty over compassion.
