Comment | At this young age, it is tricky to distinguish Scarlet and Flame Robins, both of which inhabit this area in spring-summer. The small size of the forehead patch on this one favours a Flame Robin, but I plumped for Scarlet Robin as adults of the latter species were foraging nearby and seemed to be in attendance to this youngster (happy to be corrected). In either case it has a high cute factor.
Equipment | Canon EOS 5D IV EF 100-400 L IS II + 1.4x III TC, at 560mm, centre spot servo AF, handheld Manual exposure, 1/640 sec, f/9, ISO 1250, spot metering Processing: Lightroom Classic CC for RAW conversion and initial adjustments, then Photoshop CC, where moderate noise reduction using Neat Image was applied to the bird+perch only. The background was processed separately, including a measure of Gaussian Blur to subdue distracting elements, and the background highlight above the bird's head was de-emphasised with a targeted luminosity mask. Final sharpening was applied to the bird+perch only, after size reduction to web submission dimensions.
