| Comment | We have had an unusually heavy flowering of the local eucalyptus sp. which has attracted large numbers of Rainbow and Musk Lorikeets. Unfortunately, most of the time, the birds have been out of reach high in the trees. I have been trying to capture the birds feeding and I especially wanted to get some images of the curious papillae on the end of the tongue. With hundreds of birds in the trees and few opportunities it has been a frustrating time. This image nicely shows how the birds seize the flower base and lick up the nectar but the papillae are not clearly shown. The tongue of the bird is curled up with the tip and papillae almost down its throat where I imagine the nectar is squeezed out against the roof of the mouth and then swallowed. | ||||||||||||||||||
