Comment | There are two species of Coucal in Australia. Overwhelmingly, you are likely to be looking at a Pheasant Coucal. This image has the jizz just right. Pheasant Coucals tend to look slighly untidy, a bit un-coordinated and a bit heavy in flight. Despite that they are strong movers on the ground and strong fliers. This bird is in non-breeding plumage. Note the stripes on head and breast. Note the barring on wing and tail. Note rufous on wing and tail that looks like a bit like a pheasant's tail. The BLP does not presently have have an image of the Lesser Coucal. If you live in or planning to visit the far north of Australia it is worth checking out some images on the Oriental Bird Club image database before you go. The Lesser Coucal breeding plumage is distinctly different, but note in particular that the non-breeding plumage of the Lesser is somewhat similar to that of the Pheasant Coucal. | ||||||||||||||||||
