CommentThe Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group was founded in 1958 and is one of the longest continuously serving ‘friends’ groups in Victoria. The core of the Group, comprising about ten dedicated individuals, monitor the welfare of the birds throughout the year and carry out surveys and chick banding to monitor the population and support a range of research projects. During 2016 members and friends of the Group were in the forest on 330 days recording 2569 sightings and identified 113 different banded birds. Three Dawn Surveys are conducted every winter at the peak of the breeding season. Volunteers are posted at survey points in the forest and record the time, distance and compass bearing to males as they begin their dawn territorial song. This enables an estimate of the male Lyrebird population. Another important activity is nest monitoring and chick banding. In total, 23 chicks were banded in 2016 and one fledged before banding. I was privileged to be invited to attend three chick bandings to record this important work, critical to the success of the population monitoring and research programmes.

Female Lyrebirds fiercely defend their nest against threats. They have a shrill alarm call and sometimes physically attack the head of the bird-bander.
