Our collection of photo galleries displays photographs submitted by our members. We encourage all BirdLife Photography members to submit bird photographs for display in these galleries. Photographers retain copyright of any image they submit to our galleries.

When you submit an image to a gallery, you will be asked to assign the usage rights for that image, via a set of radio buttons of the Submit Photo page.  Use only on our websites or in our newsletter/e-News means exactly that - the image will only be used in our websites (including our social media sites), and in our newsletter or e-News messages.  Images with this usage right will not have a Download Request button displayed to allow people to request the image.

Use by BirdLife Australia, its branches, groups, affiliates and members means that the image may be used by BirdLife Australia, its branches, groups, affliliates and members for BirdLife Australia activities, such as:

  • BirdLife Australia publications, magazines, newsletters and websites
  • Educational activities, e.g. presentations to and/or by BirdLife Australia members
  • Conservation reports and submissions
  • Publicity - including media activity, promotional brochures and pamphlets

Download requests from any member of BirdLife Australia, its branches, groups, or affliliates, for an image for any purpose such as these will be automatically approved by the Download Request Manager.

Any educational or conservation use by any requestor, excluding personal use is similar to the previous usage right, but it applies to requests from any person/organisation, not just those from related to BirdLife Australia.  Many of the requests we have received for images fall into this category; they include use of images for signs in parks and reserves, for a Macquarie University website providing profiles on threatened species and ecological communities in NSW, and for a children’s book on animals in Australia’s National Parks. Any download request for a purpose such as these will be automatically approved by the Download Request Manager.

Any non-commercial use by any requestor means exactly what it says - the Download Request Manager will automatically approve any request for non-commercial use of the image. This includes personal use (such as computer screen background or screen-saver), as a model for an artwork, use in a school project - anything that is a non-commercial use.

Requests which do not meet the usage rights of the image will be refused; they may (at the discretion of the Download Manager) be referred to the individual photographer.

Download requests may include a request for a higher resolution image than the one on the website.  If the request is approved, the image from the website will be supplied to the requestor, and the website will include the request for a high resolution image in an email to the photographer, asking them to contact the requestor directly if they can supply this.  BirdLife Photography does not have high resolution versions of any of the images on this website.

Any image supplied from the website will be sent to the requestor as an attachment to an email message, which will contain text defining the use of the image, as in the example shown here:

Your request for image 12345 has been approved and it is attached.

Copyright Provisions:

All images are subject to Australian and International copyright legislation and may not be used for any purpose except as detailed below:

The proposed use of the image, as stated in the Download Request.

Permission is granted for one-time use for the purpose as outlined in the Download Request, and shown in the preceding paragraph, subject to the following conditions:
Images must not be cropped or edited in any way without the permission of the photographer, although resizing to suit editorial requirements is permitted if the aspect ratio is maintained without cropping.
The photographer must be acknowledged with each image; the suggested form of acknowledgement is:
    "Species Name (C) 2016 Photographer's Name birdlifephotography.org.au"

This permission cannot be assigned or sold to a third party, nor may the image be used for any other purpose.
