The females of the Satin Flycatcher, Leaden Flycatcher and Broad-billed Flycatcher species look alike, as do the immature birds, although the Broad-billed Flycatchers tail is slightly different in appearance to the Satin and Leaden Flycatcher, however, this difference is usually observed from underneath. Otherwise, the only real way to differentiate the species is via measurements such as the length of the wing. Ultimately, your guess is probably as good as anyones!

Cheers,
Rob.

It was in Northern NSW. Does that help?

Do you have a specific location? That could help a lot.

Cheers,

Rob.

The Broad-billed is mostly in the far north (Cape York, the Gulf, coastal NT and Kimberley) and is rare on the east coast of Qld. I think the N NSW location would rule this out. This leaves the Leaden and the Satin. The females and immatures of both these species are quite similar, and notoriously difficult to tell apart. However if I was to choose, this seems to have more of the characteristics of the Leaden; fairly dull plumage on the back and head (Satin is more glossy particularly on the head), and what looks like silvery edges to the secondary and tertial wing feathers (buff in the Satin). If there was a male about, and you have photographs of it, that could help.
