CommentThis Osprey, Pandion cryostatus, is one of about 5 pairs that reside on the lower Swan River within 3kms of the Port of Fremantle. The ospreys can be seen fishing on the Swan River shallows during the daylight hours following schools of mullet, which appear to be their favoured catch. I have tried to capture the moment of impact on the water when the unfortunate fish is wrenched from its mindless ambling through the shallows to be pierced with four or eight talons and to writhe on the perch until the osprey has devoured enough of its body for it to finally die. Unfortunately the shallows are extensive and the ospreys distant so I've not had the reach with this lens.
