CommentDarters spear their prey, small fish species, with a slightly open bill. The cutting edges of the bill have fine backward pointing barbs which secure the fish. The bird shakes the fish to loosen it from the barbs, then with an upward thrust of the neck, the fish is tossed into the air. The darter then tries to catch the tumbling fish when it is in the head down position for swallowing. If it fails to catch the fish in the head down position, it will toss it up and try again.
