CommentWarbling magpie - one of my absolute favourite sounds. As far as I can tell, research has not found a specific function for warbling but it is a fascinating behaviour. According to Prof Gisela Kaplan, young birds begin practicising the third week after hatching, but never when parents are present. Kaplan says that an individual bird can have up to 740 to 780 different elements in its warbles and that this is entirely improvised, not learnt. The magpie is also an excellent mimic and its warble sequences can include mimicry. Kaplan indicates that sonographs of magpie mimicry indicate it is a far more accurate mimic than lyrebirds: 'looking at sonograms of the lyrebird mimicry performance, it becomes apparent very quickly that the lyrebirds only very superficially copy the mimicked sounds. The male singers try to get away with murder, and they do. Structurally, the rendering of the mimicry is not half as accurate as that of the magpie. The magpie is meticulous and pays great attention to detail of the sound structure.'
EquipmentCanon 80D with 100-400mm handheld at 400mm

Initially processed in Canon DPP 4 to crop, adjust exposure and lighting and perform noise reduction. A 16 bit TIFF file was created from the RAW DPP image and finished in PSE (Adobe Photoshop Elements v9) where the background was noise reduced and the main subject sharpened.
