I would welcome guidance as to whether this shorebird in fllght is a Whimbrel or Eastern Curlew. It was sighted a week ago over the mudflats of the Cairns foreshore. My initial guess is that it is a Whimbrel given the distinctly white rump, beginnings of a v-shaped white wedge on its back, and a juvenile's weaker eye-stripe (since most likely at this time of year to be a juvenile). Angle of view does not allow proper judgement of bill length but it does seem on the short side, although there may be confusion with a juvenile Eastern Curlew. Hoping someone experienced with curlews can be of assistance.

I think it is a Whimbrel from the white wedge on the back.
