Hi Geoffrey,
I would say that this is a Red-backed Fairy-wren, either female or non breeding male. My guess is that it is a female as most non breeding males have ,according to the Australian Bird Guide ,"some blackish wing coverts, darker brown flight feathers and a black suffusion to the central tail feathers".
Cheers
Mary

Thanks Mary It just happens there have been two posts on face book of similar images taken at Townsville only 100 kms from my image location. Red back and I failed to look further than the bright colors. Yes I now agree either a female or a non breeding male from what I am reading. Thanks very much for your response and help.
Cheers

If you want an excellent guide for identifying fairywrens go to the Fairywren project website. The drawings help you identify the sometimes subtle differences between females and non-breeding males. Also help with the data collection, Really easy to do.
