CommentOne of my bucket list shots for this breeding season was a clear image of a juvenile Australian Raven. This one popped down through the foliage protecting an open-air restaurant, perhaps having learned the patrons leave food from time to time.
This image is interesting for a number of reasons.
Australian Ravens have quite complex feather arrangements on their heads - note the bristles running the length of the upper beak, the ear covert set of feathers and the hackles. In this case the downy plumage of the young bird has only partially been replaced by hackles - with some feather sheaths on the throat being visible. Some of the downy plumage has been replaced by the iridescent adult plumage which looks vaguely purple in part of the image. The diagnostic pink bare patch is still visible but the pink gape has almost been completely replaced by the grey black of the adult. The lustrous brown eye reflects some of the foliage of the restaurant. The light for photography was horrible.
An adult Australian Raven was in attendance.
