I am having my usual difficulty in deciding between whether this is an Australian Pipit or a European Skylark. I am tending towards a Pipit, due to the apparent absence of a crest, and the very white outer edge to the outermost tail feathers. Would welcome help on this.
Thanks,
Michael

Hello again Michael,

I must say my immediate reaction was that this is a skylark. I checked ABG to be sure of the face markings which I am satisfied are the viz of a skylark. The crest is a positive ID point, but it is not always visible, and can be down flush with the head plumage. Both the pipit and skylark have light edges to the outer rectrices, so this is not a good ID point.

Kind regards,

Ian

Dear Ian,
Many thanks for this. It was certainly in a part of the Western Lagoon where I have often seen Skylarks. It was also not possible from the photo to check the hind-claw difference.
Regards,
Michael
